The internet and social media have transformed the ways we connect, share information, and mobilize. For many LGBTIQ+ people, these spaces offer refuge, support, and the freedom to express themselves, especially when acceptance is lacking in their immediate surroundings. However, they are also spaces where specific forms of violence occur : harassment, hate speech, algorithmic censorship, and the spread of stereotypes.
The City of Geneva’s 2025 annual campaign reminded the public that no one is neutral online and that staying silent, looking away, or minimizing these attacks only leaves more room for hate and exclusion. With the slogan “Together against cyberviolence targeting LGBTIQ+ people!”, it launched a genuine call to action to make the internet a truly safe, respectful, and accessible space for everyone.
