As part of Pride Month, the City of Bordeaux inaugurated two new squares, central locations in neighbourhood life, named after two lesbian and bisexual women who made history through their struggles and values:

  • Marielle Franco, a Brazilian municipal councillor, sociologist, feminist, anti-racist and LGBTQI+ activist, who was assassinated on 14 March 2018 in Rio de Janeiro
  • Marguerite Chabiron, a French lesbian resistance fighter who was deported to the Ravensbrück camp during the Second World War.

The inauguration of the Marielle Franco square was attended by Monica Benicio, Marielle Franco’s widow, municipal councillor and human rights activist, and Pierre Hurmic, mayor of Bordeaux.

These new squares thus raise the visibility of queer women in public spaces.
