The City of Helsinki conducts participatory budgeting which allows residents to make proposals and vote on the allocation of several million euros. A proposal to provide safer spaces and activities for queer young people in north-east Helsinki was successful in the voting process and is being implemented in year 2025. A special LGBTIQ youth worker has been recruited to coordinate and implement activities that cater to the needs and wishes of the queer young people in the area, e.g. peer groups, outdoor trips and movie nights. Some of the activities have been planned and implemented by young people themselves. Young people from different parts of Helsinki and even from neighbouring cities have also been keen and welcome to participate.
