Amsterdam’s previous Pride policy framework dates back to 2011 and was in need of renewal. Both the city and the Pride event itself have evolved, sparking ongoing discussions about its content, format, location, and goals—as well as the requirements for its organizers. A clearer legal and administrative foundation for Pride was also needed.

Public consultation, stakeholder input and two ‘pilot years’ with umbrella organizers have shaped a new policy framework. The goals of this framework are:

  • A Pride where all groups within the LGBTQIA+ community can contribute to the event
  • A program that balances protest and celebration, offering something for everyone
  • A manageable Pride with special attention to safety during the final weekend, which includes the canal parade and major street parties

Starting in 2025, Amsterdam Pride is no longer organized by a single party. Instead, the city provides annual and multi-year funding to various organizations. Amsterdam Pride has also expanded from a one-week to a month-long event.
