Le Refuge is a pioneering best practice in The Hague’s queer policy. Developed by SHOP Den Haag and Stichting Queer Mind, inspired by Le Refuge Bruxelles, it offers both a safe space and temporary shelter for queer youth. The project provides a homelike environment where young people can be themselves, supported daily by peers with lived experience. It bridges the gap between queer youth and mainstream care, improving queer sensitivity in welfare and housing services. Le Refuge also gathers data on systemic barriers queer youth face and translates these into recommendations for more inclusive care. With its holistic focus on safety, empowerment, and prevention of homelessness, Le Refuge strengthens The Hague’s commitment to a city that is safe, visible, and accepting for all queer residents.
